I wasn’t.
Feel free to insult me in the comment section, but let me land first. First of all, for those who haven’t read the joke, here it is (it was posted on his Facebook page):
If I hadn’t heard anything about people being offended by this joke, I would have read it and laughed and forgotten about it. But I received some kind of notification on my phone (maybe a BBM broadcast, don’t remember now) about Basketmouth being offensive with his joke. So I went searching for this rape joke.
I wasn’t offended because a part of my brain processed this as a joke that was told by a Nigerian to fellow Nigerians. My braid processed the context in which it was told. How many times have we watched Nigerian comedies about rape and laughed about it? How many times has a husband [in a movie] said to his wife: I will rape you oh! and we all burst out laughing? The only time it’s funnier is when a woman says it to her husband. How many of us laugh when we read serious stories about a man being raped by his wife and we laugh (like the story of the man that was raped to death by his 6 wives)? I know I do. But you know, in real life, men actually do get raped.
When rape is done or talked about for the sake of humorous entertainment, it’s usually funny. Am I alone in understanding what Basketmouth was trying to say? I think he meant that men don’t have to work too hard to get a White girl in bed, but in an African girl’s case, it’s like pulling teeth. For those of us who have White friends, should we not then be offended on their behalf? Because the joke is implying that White girls are cheap and African girls aren’t — and isn’t this just a common misconception? It’s not that African girls no dey chop, but that African girls just know how to chop clean mouth. African girls know how to sex their entire village AND still go to night vigil and be the last one to leave.
So why are people so up in arms because Basketmouth made a joke about what we already make jokes about and laugh about? Does anyone actually think that he literally meant you should rape a woman? Now, that said, I am actually very impressed that people – men and women alike – are quick to jump on him and say that rape is NOT acceptable. To me, it means we are growing up and evolving as a people.
Basketmouth has apologized for offending us, so people need to move on. Unless you want him to pop a vein, I don’t know how else he is supposed to apologize. On this issue, Nigeria, I really think you are barking up the wrong tree.
And no, Basketmouth did not pay me worth a dime to write this. But he should. Meanwhile, there’s something I think you should be offended about. I’ll blog about it tomorrow. I’m too tired right now.
Now, if it pleases you, you may curse me out in the comment section. I won’t bark back.
P.S. It’s 7 days to my birthday!!! Have you seen my birthday wish list? 😀
Please, please, try and sleep!!
I wasn’t offended. And you have pretty much said all I would want to say.
People going further to say he should lose his endorsement is taking it a bit far. People comparing him to Sacco are, I can’t even describe it.
Thing is, the whole thing isn’t even his, he just copied and shared it (as a joke).
Talk of carrying wahala for something that isn’t even yours.
Oh yeah, happy birthday in advance
THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I saw that the topic was already overflogged and voltrons wont ever listen to voice of reasoning ..so no need flogging a dead horse..He had even apologized by the time I read about it.
I have almost been raped before…it is NOT a funny situation….however, even I still found some humour in the write up
Rape is never funny. Especially for those of us who have been through it. Making it funny and making jokes about it minimizes the reality and severity of the fact that rape is a very real and very serious issue. Especially in countries like Nigeria where everyone likes to bury their head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t happen or only happens because people dress indecently. Even as im typing this i still haven’t fully read and digested the joke and what little of it i did read wasn’t even funny. I don’t have an opinion about this particular situation but in general there’s nothing humorous about normalizing rape in any way.
Happy BDay in advance though i’m sure i’ll be back before the actual day
Search me o!!! I read and re-read the joke like 3 times and it still didn’t sound offensive to me. My TL was filled up with rape activists immediately. Az in!
No. Rape isn’t a joke. At all. And we all know that. But gaskiya walahi, this joke didn’t look to me like it was belittling the offence or encouraging men to rape (or vice versa).
I have 2 theories: pips had pre-existing beefs with Basket Mouth and just latched on this.
Or they just wanted to shout for no reason. Eitherways, didn’t make sense.
Nigerians shaa….
How many times have we heard this joke b4.
I personally have heard it countless times
I just dont get the vex.
I just want to say;
@ Ngo: if u read the joke objectively, which I’m urging you to do, its pure humour. Basically he or whoever the author is saying is that if a white girl wants u, by the 2nd date or so u hit the sacks while a Naija girl who has no intention of dating or sleeping with u will keep taking and taking and what an angry guy who has been giving in hopes for something to happen will get angry and rape the girl.
I do not think it means the author or Basket Mouth who retold the joke was endorsing or encouraging rape. I hope u do see it this way.
Rape is ugly. Its sad. Its everything wrong and more and I’m one of the people who would love that rapists pay for this horrible act.
