Sooo … I Saw Django (the ‘D’ is silent)

I did not realize until we saw the movie that the name is actually Django Unchained. Everyone (or most people) just call it Django. First of all, how was your Christmas? On Christmas Day, Igwe and I did not do much. It was a lazy day, felt like Saturday. There was no work, stores were closed, eyes were drowsy. You get the point. He managed to cook some potatoes for himself that morning, and he has not let me hear the end of it. All of a sudden, he thinks he’s something special. I won’t mention that before he started cooking, he asked me, “How do you turn this stove on?” Yeah, okay.

We decided to go see Django in the evening, and we bought the tickets online because Christmas Day was its opening day, and we did not want any disappointments at the theater. Speaking of buying tickets online, I have nooo idea why we have not been doing this. So off we went to see Django. As a Quentin Tarantino movie, I went with one thing in mind: There. Will. Be. Blood.

The movie was greeeaaaaaat. I don’t know the words that movie critics use to describe movies, but if you ask me, I’ll say it was surprisingly funny, entertaining, touching, worth every dime and more, a must-see, intriguing … yeap, I loved it that much. There was a lot of gun violence and blood-spilling that was kind of comical; I mean, the way the blood was shooting out, it’s fair to say it rained blood.

The performances of Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson were phenomenal. Kerry Washington was great, too, but there was not a lot of her (not as much as the aforementioned, anyway). This movie touched on a lot of things: slavery, love, violence, humor, loyalty, and humanity in general. It was a satirical movie, in my opinion. You know, every time I see a movie that depicts slavery, I am reminded of how resilient African-Americans are. To be treated as less than, and to have no choice but to accept it, is a troubling fate.

I had to come home and read about Christoph Waltz who played the part of Dr. King Schultz, a German-speaking dentist and bounty hunter (interesting combination, no?). He had the same effect on me as Daniel Day-Lewis did in Lincoln. His accent in the movie isn’t fake, and he actually does speak German in real life. He was born in Austria, and his father is German. I don’t know what this information will do for you, but I like that I know it. And I now love Daniel Day-Lewis too, who I read is the most selective actor ever, and who I also read prepares so hard for his movie roles that it sometimes becomes detrimental to his health. Shall we call this passion or dedication? Both, I guess.

Back to Django, if you have not seen it – or if you don’t know what movie to see, you should see it. I’m happy that it’s been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards, but I’m sad that Jamie Foxx wasn’t nominated (Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz were nominated). The Golden Globes in on January 13th 2013 and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Absolute hilarity. Wish I could be there. Hear me, gods of The Golden Globes, I. Wish. I. Could. Be. There.
