Just in case you’ve been living under a rock (Hi Funmie!), Robin Thicke’s song, Blurred Lines is currently America’s number one song. I love the song. But then, I love Robin Thicke, too. I can count on one hand how many albums I have bought with my money, and Robin Thicke’s 2006 album, The Evolution Of Robin Thicke is one of them.
His new hit song, Blurred Lines featuring T.I. and Pharrell is getting played and downloaded like crazy. Unfortunately, there are critics who say that the song celebrates rape. This is based on the line, “I know you want it,” which Thicke says several times. Huh???? Apparently, “I know you want it” is something that rapists say to their victims.
Having watched more episodes of Law & Order SVU than I care to admit, I am aware that “I know you want it” is a line that rapists can and do use, but that doesn’t mean that every time it is said, it’s referring to rape. Keeping it in a sexual context, isn’t this something that a person can say to his/her spouse or partner?
In response to this, Robin Thicke calls it ridiculous. I agree. He adds, “It was about blurring the lines between men and women and how much we’re the same. My wife is as strong as I am, as smart, if not smarter, stronger and she’s an animal too! She doesn’t need a man to define her or to define her existence.”
He was also criticized on having naked women in the video, an argument I find ludicrous. (This video has two versions: one with the girls topless, and the other one not topless). Have you seen rap videos recently? Have you even listened to their lyrics recently? Women are called bitches and hos, and rappers proudly talk about putting people in the ground. I guess it’s much better to be put in the ground than say words than remind people of rape.
To the criticism on the naked women, Robin Thicke apparently insisted that they shoot another video with the women clothed, but his wife, Paula Patton liked the naked version better. “My initial response actually was that I loved the clothed version! I didn’t think we should put out the naked version. And then I showed it to my wife and all of her girlfriends and they said ‘You have to put this out! This is so sexy and so cool'”
So to answer the question that is the title of this post, I say a big, fat NO. It is NOT a rape song. Watch the video below and read the lyrics after it. I got these lyrics from AZ Lyrics, so I cannot verify that they are all right, but we can at least get an idea.
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey[Verse 1: Robin Thicke]
If you can’t hear what I’m trying to say
If you can’t read from the same page
Maybe I’m going deaf,
Maybe I’m going blind
Maybe I’m out of my mind[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you’re an animal, baby it’s in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don’t need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that’s why I’m gon’ take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me[Verse 2: Robin Thicke]
What do they make dreams for
When you got them jeans on
What do we need steam for
You the hottest bitch in this place
I feel so lucky
Hey, hey, hey
You wanna hug me
Hey, hey, hey
What rhymes with hug me?
Hey, hey, hey[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you’re an animal, baby it’s in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don’t need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
Hey, hey, hey
[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that’s why I’m gon’ take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
[Verse 3: T.I.]
One thing I ask of you
Let me be the one you back that ass to
Yo, from Malibu, to Paribu
Yeah, had a bitch, but she ain’t bad as you
So hit me up when you passing through
I’ll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two
Swag on, even when you dress casual
I mean it’s almost unbearable
Then, honey you’re not there when I’m
With my foresight bitch you pay me by
Nothing like your last guy, he too square for you
He don’t smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I just watch and wait for you to salute
But you didn’t pick
Not many women can refuse this pimpin’
I’m a nice guy, but don’t get it if you get with me
[Bridge: Robin Thicke]
Shake the vibe, get down, get up
Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don’t like work?
[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
Baby can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica
It always works for me Dakota to Decatur, uh huh
No more pretending
Hey, hey, hey
Cause now you winning
Hey, hey, hey
Here’s our beginning
[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
I always wanted a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
[Outro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Myne Whitman says
I used to like Robin Thicke a lot, but some of that like went with this song. It may not be a rape song, but like that rap songs and videos, it’s not a woman friendly song. Congrats to him on it making no1 with such lines. And we wonder why women are treated the way they are?
Yeah, had a bitch, but she ain’t bad as you
So hit me up when you passing through
I’ll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two
…
Nothing like your last guy, he too square for you
He don’t smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I just watch and wait for you to salute
Vera Ezimora says
Awwww. Whenever the song comes on, I cannot stop dancing. I love it that much. Part of the reason why I like it is because it’s from Robin Thicke, and the man can’t do any wrong in my eyes.
MsDawari says
I like Robin Thicke very much and I like this song too but you know people get offended by anything that borders on morals…it just gives most people some kind of validation.
For me, it sounds more like kinky stuff than rape. Yeah, some lines are offensive, but what of all the rap songs? Aren’t they even more offensive?…so no, I don’t think it’s about rape.
Vera Ezimora says
MsDawari, yeah, I understood people saying they don’t like the song or the lyrics, but I think that calling it a rape song is taking it a little too far. But oh well.

“He was also criticized on having naked women in the video”
For all people who has the problem for female nudity in art. Maybe they change their minds:
