One of our favorite things to do is watch television. Igwe and I watch TV shows, movies, vlogs, and documentaries together. I usually come on here to recommend shows and movies to you, but today, I want to recommend a documentary. For some reason, although I pay the $9.99 each month for Netflix, I don’t remember the last time I actually watched a movie on there. When Igwe was in Nigeria (in July of this year), that was the last time I watched a show (Being Mary Jane). Considering the caliber of documentaries that are available on Netflix, I think I will visit Netflix more often.
Last week, we watched a documentary, called Big Men. Big Men is about oil being discovered in Ghana. Oil has been a blessing and a curse for every country that has it. Look at Nigeria, for example. Well, the story isn’t different in Ghana. And just like with the rest of the world, although the oil is in Ghana, somehow the United States of America is really the one with most of the power.as about
The most interesting part of Big Men for me was the part about Nigeria and the Niger-Delta. In America, if oil is discovered on your land, that means you don blow, your luck has changed for the better. In Nigeria, however, the people who have the oil are one of the most impoverished ones because the government just takes and takes and takes and does nothing for the people in return. In light of that, can you blame the people for blowing up pipelines and doing whatever it takes to send a message? I don’t blame the people at all. Prepare to be pissed off when you watch this.
