…That I, Vera Ezimora, have single-handedly figured out the root and cause of the political strife in Nigeria?? Ah, yes, indeed, it could be. You see, it all started like the Garden of Eden. Remember back then, things were perfect, and there was no sin. (Azazel, jump in anytime and disagree J). Things were perfect — until Eve got lured and deceived by Lucifer. I’m sure we all know that story. Fast forward to a couple thousand years later, in the newly independent Country of Nigeria. Things were running well – as they always do in the beginning – until something went terribly, terribly wrong.
You see, our President, Nnamdi Azikiwe hosted a dinner, a dinner where dignitaries, affluent people, and movers and shakers were all present. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was there. Alhaji Shehu Shagari was there. Obafemi Awolowo was there, too. The event started off with everyone having a round table discussion. They talked about Nigeria’s way forward, about free healthcare for children, and about coming up with a name for Nigeria’s currency.
Things were going well until the actual dinner was served. It was then that General Johnson Aguiyi and General Yakubu Gowon began to struggle over the food, over who would eat more, and over who would take more takeaway plates home. General Johnson grabbed most of the takeaway and ran off. General Yakubu caught up with him, murdered him, and ate all the food. And that, my people, is how we became so greedy in Nigeria.
Now, if you think that this post has anything to do with the event I attended on Sunday where Nigerians could not happily eat a plate of food each, but had to grab plates on both hands, leaving some other people without food, then, well, I cannot confirm or deny your allegation! If you further insist that this event took place in a church in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A, I still cannot confirm or deny your allegation.
EDJ says
First!
Your post hit the nail on the head! Greed is the root of much of the trouble in Nigeria.
Anonymous says
Second!!!!!YEAH!!!!!!! First time! I seriously agree with you, Greed is the root of most of Nigeria's problem…as for your event you attended, for church, people no even fit pretend?? Chai! Chineke! Save us oh!
Woomie O! says
He he he. It's greed alright! But not just for food. Lol. It must have been really irritating watching ur kinsmen perform!
Jaycee says
At least I'm #4…it's good to be awake at 12.49am o…lol.
Okay…in other words those people at that church event were very greedy lol. I still haven't answered this question: "Why do Nigerians always fight with hosts/hostesses at parties because of food amount or servings?" Or wait…there's also the fight for gifts…wedding, birthday you name it.
Nigeria, my country. I wish it were like Eden. I don tire.
Myne Whitman says
Such is life. The love of money aka greed is the root of evil. As for your church people, make them catch you, lol.
Vera Ezimora says
EDJ: Tell me about it!! No matter how many times you say it, we'll never learn.
Anonymous: Congrats on being first! The church people no gree pretend ooo. Pretending would have caused them their extra plate of food, and they couldn't have that, of course. LOL.
Woomie: My dear, it was more than annoying oh. In fact, I don't know what word to use.
Jaycee: Hmmph! It's like any party you attend where people are not fighting for food and/or gifts, it means the party has not yet started. It's so annoying because whatever they're fighting for is really not worth that much.
Vera Ezimora says
Myne: Nne, as you can see, I didn't say it's about church oooo!!! In fact, I sternly refused to confirm such an allegation. LOL. No one from church can hold me responsible for what I have not said or written.
NBB says
yeah greed is an strong overwhelming and excessive desire for anything than is actually needed. it could be money, power, position, material things… and food. All for selfish reasons. God help us!
Mamuje says
Its quite sad though, the way we greedily scramble for anything…as if there isnt enough to go round.? Pathetic almost.
BBB says
its a sad but true story, Greed is def the root of our prob
and that dinner might actually have happened like that u never know,
hehhehehehe
Girl, u twisted
Funms-the rebirth says
Greed….one of our many problems
and eh ya, did u eventually get some food to eat, no?
our people too like food jare
T.Notes says
Haha, i knew it!!!!Finally somebody else has seen the light too! Always said it, its those old men that long ago conspired and concocted the root problem of this country's depravity!!!Vera, its even deeper than that! Before the foodfight started, there was an altercation in the darkest corner of kitchen between General Johnson Aguiyi and General Yakubu Gowon and guess what/who they were fighting about–iya Basirat, the owner of the local Buka!
General Johnson (Angst): Oya iya Basirat, tell this stupid man who you love pass!
General Yakubu Gowon:Heyyyy, na me you disrespect so!Shege!!!
Etc!!!!
***Honestly I tire of discussing Nigeria(n)'s issues***
j.ifeme says
Looks like the greed is in our pedigree…lol
Justjoxy says
At the risk of sounding pedantic, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. If you leave home hungry, and have to wait a while before food is served, then it is only right to fight for food. If your hosts have made the mistake of provide so much variety that it cannot fit on just one plate, then two full plates is the way to go. And if it happens to take place in church, you have to eat as much of the sanctified food as you can get your hands on. Only logical.
Anoda Phase says
Greed! I agree…but then, aren't we all? greedy, that is…
that Church food massacre, na wa oh…God help His people…
Ms.O says
LOL! Of course you cannot confirm or deny these allegations! Greed…smh!
Omotee! says
That greed thing ehn, na wa o, na the main issue be that.
as for the church event, na real wa o! i've vowed never to be in charge of souvenirs at any occassion again, and i advise u, if u cant go to war (literarily), dont bother trying to share souvenirs at Nigerian parties
~B~ says
LOOL! u're too funny!
but u hav a point thow, it's still greed!!!
Vera Ezimora says
NBB: God help us all indeed! I know that human beings are naturally greedy, but it just feels like Nigerians are especially greedy — even when it comes to little things like food.
Mamaje: It is not almost pathetic. It is indeed very, very pathetic. You'd think that here in America, we would have some decency, but it's the same all around. I don't understand it.
BBB: LOL @ the dinner happening the way I told it. If it did, then I am really, really twisted. Ha!
Funmns: I did get some food to eat, but that's because I was one of the first people that came out. The people that came out last didn't have any food, not because it wasn't enough, but because some other people had taken more than they needed to.
T. Notes: I always knew that somewhere in the four corners of this world, there is someone like me out there. Lo and behold, here you are! LOL. If Iya Basirat weren't already with her forefathers, I would have summoned her to my chambers at once!
J. Ifeme: Yeap. It definitely looks like it. There's no other plausible explanation.
Just Joxy: Hahahaha. Pedantic??? No! Now, where on earth did you get such an idea? On the contrary, your views are quite — quite — quite— what's the word — comprehensibly standard. Of course … lol. Who, in their right mind, would blame Aguiyi anyway?? No one!
Anoda Phase: LOL @ church food massacre. For some reason, your comment reminded of the Texas chainsaw massacre. I'm not sure that's such a good thing.
Ms. O: Wetin you wan make I do? You want me to say something that will put me in trouble? No oh! I refuse to confirm or deny anything.
Omotee: Hahahaha. Been there, done that. The thing that always amazes me, like I said, is the simplicity and triviality of the so-called souvenirs. They're probably things that do not worth up to a dollar. Still, people must fight and make enemies over them.
~B~: Honey, but of course, I have a point. LOL. The best thing really is for people to bring their own food to every event. Gbam!
