I don’t know about you, but the first time I heard about Manolo Blahnik was on Sex and the City, where the lead character, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) was a writer and a fashionista who was always in heels – Manolo Blahnik, to be precise. Well, it turns out that all those times she was wearing heels, it wasn’t just an act. I mean, when the camera went off, she did not take the shoes off (as I would have).
Several years later, Sarah Jessica Parker says she’s giving up heels because her feet are disfigured. She said, “For ten years or so, I literally ran in heels. I worked eighteen-hour days and never took them off. I wore beautiful shoes, some better made than others, and never complained.” She also said, “I went to a foot doctor and he said, ‘Your foot does things it shouldn’t be able to do. That bone there … you’ve created that bone. It shouldn’t be there.'” Uhm, ouch.
I think we all know that heels have a way of changing everything. They change the way you look, the way you walk, the way you feel (and sometimes this might mean that you now feel excruciating pain). For me, I love my heels. The highest one I have is five-three-quarters in height, but as much as I love them, I need them to be relatively comfortable.
World-famous designer, Christian Louboutin has compared comfortable shoes to being in a a bad relationship. He says, “‘It’s like when people say: “Well we’re not really in love but we’re in a comfortable relationship.”You’re abandoning a lot of ideas when you’re too into comfort.’ ‘Comfy, that’s one of the WORST words! I just picture a woman feeling bad, with a big bottle of alcohol, really puffy. It’s really depressing, but she likes her life because she has comfortable clogs.'”
Yeah, well, Im’ma have to disagree with you there, Mr. Louboutin. I have had the pain and pleasure of experiencing both, and they are nothing like each other. When you wear six inches for just an hour, then you can come back and tell me again how much you hate comfort in shoes.
I think that in everything, there should be moderation. I wouldn’t wear flats on a red carpet, or with an evening gown, but I don’t need to wear five inches to a baby shower. Or a picnic. I don’t know why women wear heels to picnics, but that’s for another day. I wear flats as often as my feet feel like it. Just yesterday, I dressed up for church, wore my high heels, got to the door, walked out, and then, walked back in and kicked the shoes off my feet. It was a flat-shoes-to-church day. My feet thanked me.
I also do not believe in excruciating pain, all in the name of wearing heels. High heels cannot ever be as comfortable as not wearing heels because the heels of our feet are not naturally five inches off the ground. So I expect some level of discomfort. But I refuse to go through excruciating pain because of heels. And the shoes I wear depend on where I’m going and how active I will be. Example, if I’m going to be standing on my feet a lot, then I’ll opt for the less uncomfortable heels. If I’m just going to be sitting pretty, I can up my game.
What about you? How long do you wear your heels? How often do you wear them? And how high is your highest pair?

My highest heels are about 5 inches but I respect myself a lot when it comes to shoes. At work where I know I’m bound to be walking up and down or standing over a table for a long period of time, I mostly wear flats or very low heels. If I know there’s an external meeting, I wear low heels and carry flats (just in case).
I prefer to wear wedges though, bcus they are most comfortable for me. I’ll only wear 5 inch stilettos to a place where I know it’s from car to the event and back in the car without necessarily having to walk around. The women in my office kill me everyday bcus of the rubbish way they wear heels and if it disturbs me as a lady, I wonder how the men feel about it.

Hmmm. I need to look into wedges again. I only own one pair, and it’s really casual, and I haven’t even worn it because it’s peep toe and I bought it during the winter. And yes, girl, I have seen people who wear heels that make them walk and stand weird. Fun to watch though.

I love my comfort too Vera! My longest are also 5 point somethn n I make sure I wear them to church for 2 hours. 1 hour praise and worship and 1 hour recovering during the service LOL!
I love the look that heels give u but then again one needs to know how to walk in them. Hate pple who get a funny walk wen in heels. Then again, they should stick to flats.
I choose my flats for comfort but once in a while, I do heels bt after serious calculations in knowng that my car is round the corner, or a chair is not so far from me. I also have the tiniest sandals I carry in my tote when worse comes to worse. Lol!
Vera Ezimora says
Erene, exactly!! I will not wear heels and stand in them for hours when my feet are on fire. It’s just not worth it. Wearing heels, in my opinion, involves a lot of calculation. Go girl!

This is why I love twitter you can eavesdrop on a convo without being creepy, I was following the convo that I believe brought about this topic between you and Sisi Yemmie lol. I don’t really do heels except for special occasions I am a flats all day errday kinda girl besides I am tall enough as it is and heels just add unnecessary height for me will leave that to the small people haha. So only worn as and when needed.
Vera Ezimora says
Well, I am not tall — in case you haven’t noticed. And lol @ eavesdropping on Twitter. You’ve got it the other way around though. It wasn’t the conversation that brought about this topic. It’s the topic that brought about the conversation. How much are you gonna pay me now?

I admire heels. I rocked heels for a few years and I boasted of my heels wearing ability. The longest I did was about 6 hrs. And I was going up n down organising my boss’s party. Now my knees n back protest. Low heels or just pose in heels for a few hrs.
I laugh when I see ladies with funny gais cos of ridiculous heels, u know heels that tilt u to some awkward position. Nah. No be me
Vera Ezimora says
Omotee, I don’t want to get to the point where I have used up all my heel-wearing power, so I’m gonna go easy, so I’ll have some left for later. I’ve seen the awkward positions. They’re interesting.
deaduramilade says
My highest heels are 6 inches but the heel is thick and it is platformed which makes it super comfy.
Vera Ezimora says
Girl, after I fell off some high platforms, I have been feeling differently about them.

I’ll be back to comment after I fully understand Mr. Louboutin’s words. On second thoughts I’ll drop my 2 cents jare. The only place where the word comfort is frowned upon is in the bible, and the context in which its used is different. In terms of evangelizing, getting better at one’s craft, becoming a better person at work and with spouses, yes- we might need to turn up the heat a little bit. If we don’t we might not recognize or utilize our full potential. Besides this, I can’t think of any comfort with 3+ inch heels. Sorry oo, lol 😀
Vera Ezimora says
Hahahaha. I couldn’t figure out where you were going with this at first, but now I see. Very funny! Tehehe.
