No, I mean, seriously — what’s wrong with this picture?
This picture circulated around the web yesterday, and most people asked the same question: what’s wrong with this picture? I examined it several times, wondered if it is her outfit? Her hair? Jonathan’s outfit? The green-white-green plane they stepped out from? Or perhaps, the very bright flash that was used to take this picture?
Alas, it is neither. The problem is that President Goodluck Jonathan and his First Lady flew into New York three nights ago for the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and before Mr. President could even come down the steps, his First Lady was already down there shaking hands. Angry Nigerians say it is an outrage! Of all places to humiliate Nigeria, Mr. President and his wife chose New York … during the 66th session of the UN General Assembly of all times. Sacrilege!
You know the drill. I have a few questions:
1. If Mr. President had walked ahead of his wife, would Nigeria have had a better reputation at the emergence of this picture?
2. If this alleged public humiliation of Nigeria had occured anywhere else but New York, like Ghana, would it have been an easier pill to swallow?
3. If this alleged public humiliation of Nigeria had also occured during a different event (instead of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly), like perhaps during Halloween when the President and his First Lady dress up as a passive president and his wife, would it have felt better?
4. Is it not possible that the First Lady washed her hands in holy water before walking off the plane and so deliberately shook hands first in order to nullify all evil spirits and charms passable via hand shakes and therefore fortify her husband against evil attacks?
5. If the evil spirit theory is total garbage and it is indeed true that Mr. President doesn’t call the presidential shots but rather his wife, should we not be happy that the shot caller at least has an identity?
6. And if it is true that the First Lady is the shot caller, then should we not regret voting Mr. President in – instead of his wife?
7. But that all said, is it the First Lady’s fault that her husband’s dress was making him walk slowly?
Instead of bickering about who calls the shots and who shook hands first, should we not worry about what the First Lady might have said while she was calling the shots and shaking hands? What if she said, “This your country is far oh! And very beautiful too. I don’t know why all these small, small childrens are committing suicide in a country like this. But me, if I were living in a country like this, I would rather die than commit suicide.”
If you do not understand the parts in bold, then you need to get to know our First Lady.
It is protocol that the President exits the plane first. However, this shows that Mr. Jonathan is a “gentleman.” As it is a trait of a “gentleman” to allow a (his) lady walk out the door (Plane) first.
Quite honestly, I couldn’t care less who walked out first as that is not really Nigeria’s pressing issue. But if it is a presidential etiquette that the President walks out first, then I think they should have observed it. Oh, well.
Yes, he was trying to be a gentlemen instead of being the President. Did he forget he was on official duty NOT a date????
buhahahahhahahhaha. BTW, who’s hands is she shaking?
Adabeke, I don’t know whose hand she’s shaking oh. Who knows if that is where the evil spirit was trying to come from. LOL.
Ekundayo, yeap, I think he most certainly did forget — or maybe Madam President was just doing as I said she might have been doing in number four.
I am dying of laughter here. Particularly number four and the last paragraph. Vera you are not right ooh. hahahahahha.
Adabeke, but it is true now! If you husband was the president, wouldn’t you try to ward off evil spirits, too, by any means possible? Hahahaha. Biko, don’t blame me jare.
buhahahahah! hilarious!
LOL. Laugh all you want. I’m serious! 😀

Baroque, I don’t know how it is that is supposed to teach her. There might not even be a person meant to teach her these things. You know how Naija doesn’t take the little things seriously. Oh, well. The thing don happen.
