Michelle’s? Or my mother’s?
On Wednesday, January 27th 2010, President Barack Obama gave his State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. I assume that other families, just like mine, were seated in front of their television, glassy eyes glued to the bright screen, ears as eager as alert dogs, and feet and hands just waiting to give standing ovations after standing ovations. Or maybe it was just my family then. Specifically, that mother of mine.
So ecstatic was she; so hopeful was she; so passionate was she — about Obama that she refused to use the bathroom, even when her bladder threatened to give way. She did not want to miss the speech, she said.
“Tell them!” She chanted every now and then.
“Intelligent man!”
“Look at McCain’s face, very jealous man!”
“Look at the Republicans; they’re not happy…”
… And so on, and so forth.
And when Obama said, “…I want to acknowledge our First Lady, Michelle Obama, who this year, is creating a national movement to tackle the epidemic of childhood obesity and make our kids healthier…” mom showed her support by clapping and shouting a thunderous, “Yes!”
But when Grandma asked, “Gini k’okwu?” [What did he say?]
Mom said, “Anuro kwa’m” [I didn’t hear oh].
Well, if this isn’t passion, what then? Thankfully, I was there to tell them what he said — though I was actually in the kitchen — washing dishes. On that note, I must say that Obama’s speech was verastically appetizing as usual. With the kind of ability he has to touch people through his spoken words, I wonder the kind of damage he would do to the dark world, if he were a Pastor. And I wonder, too, if we would ever have a leader like him in Nigeria.
Amidst the wondering, however, life must go on. So, please don’t forget our virtual date tomorrow morning. Verasticall Speakin’ Talk Radio will be airing as usual at 10am U.S. Eastern (4pm Nigerian time). Topic: Pre-marriage Marriage.
