When I was in elementary school, my parents told me that I was a scholar. They said I don’t become a student until I get into secondary school. In America, the first year of secondary school is part of middle school (7th grade). I could not wait to become a student. To me, it signified growth and maturity – especially maturity. Although we technically had back to school shopping in Nigeria, it was not officially called that, and the shopping was more about school supplies like books, food and snacks for boarding school, and of course, school uniforms.
So when I came to America and found out about back to school shopping, it was everything but the clothes that tickled me. It was the pens, daily planners, pen cup, hot pink stapler, new bath soap, and of course, new shaving sticks. Those were the things I wanted so badly. and I did whatever I could to get them.
Several years later, I have long graduated from college, but I still get excited for back to school shopping. I love how stores would put all the school supplies toward the front of the store and almost everything in the store is advertised as back to school. Even apples! I always go to those aisles with the school supplies – you know the one where anxious parents are patiently walking through the aisles with their children with a paper in hand, trying to go down the list. Meanwhile, the children seem to want and point to everything but what’s on the list. I like that aisle.
And while I’m at it, I cannot help but enjoy the company of the unknowing college students who are buying their new toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and beauty products, ready to ship off to college – some for the very first time. I never got to live on campus, but that did not stop me from doing my own back to school shopping. Being a college graduate has not stopped me either. I imagine that when my future children make it to college, I might be doing more shopping than them.
Take for instance, this Schick Hydro Razor. It has 5 curve-sensing blades, and those of us who shave know the importance of this. Cuts and scrapes are not fun at all. It gives you a really close shave without the irritation, and it has a serum that is activated by water. I definitely need this for when school starts.
I got it from Rite-Aid, and if you have been to Rite-Aid, then you know that it’s easy, breezy shopping. In and out. Done. I went to the aisle that said, ‘Shaving,’ found my item, paid for it, and zipped.
Back to school is an absolutely wonderful time.
