How Do You Combat Your Allergies?

 When I was in Nigeria, I didn’t know much about alergies. I knew what it meant to be allergic to something, and I knew that there could be consequences, but it was not until I got to America that I realized just how many things people can allergic to: pollen, cats, peanut butter, shrimps, and much more.

Every time I tell people that I don’t eat shrimps, oysters, lobsters, and whatever weird shaped sea animal people eat, the conclusion is always that I am allergic. But I’m not. I just don’t like strange seafood. I’ve always been under the impression that I don’t have any allergies at all. African people don’t have allergies, right? Wrong.

Turns out, I do have an allergy. And it’s seasonal. Mine happens with constant, unending teary eyes. Everyone knows me for my teary eyes. I remember a few years ago I went to see a school counselor in college to discuss my options for a major I was considering. I don’t remember what major it was, but I know that at the end of the conversation, I knew it wasn’t a major I could go for, and I was a little sad. Silmutaneously, my eyes began to water and tears came rolling down my cheeks. The counselor thought I was crying, and she said, “Do not despair. Everything will be okay.”  I did not bother telling her that it was not what it looked like.

The most annoying part of my teary eyes is how it messes my makeup up. I’m constantly dabbing a tissue in my eye to soak up the tears and stop them from rolling down my face. I don’t have any specific beauty methods for combating my teary eyes, but I have had to alter my makeup routine by not applying anything on my eyes because I’m so afraid that it will aggravate the allergies. I have also had to switch my tissue brand to get one with the least dust (and is lotion treated). When all else fails, I wear sunglasses. I don’t know how it does it, but it helps me look better.
