This past weekend, I finally got to hang out with my girls. You may disagree with me, but I believe that having good friends is essential. We had been talking about hanging out for like over a year, but we finally got around and did it. Before we hung out, our friend, Tim fell ill and that scared the pants off of us. I don’t have the words to say how happy I was to be sitting across from Tim.
Our date was set for 7pm. We were supposed to get dinner at TGIF and then go watch ‘This Is Where I Leave You.” We met at White Marsh because it has a lot of restaurants and the movie theater is right there, too. Solachi and I got there at about 7:10, and no one else was there. Funmie, Ibukun, and Tim finally made it at 8:00 PM. Funmie came late because she thought I gave her the wrong time in order to trick her into coming on time (which I have done in the past, but only because Funmie is ALWAYS late). Tim came late because why would I expect her to be there on time when I wasn’t sharing money. Ibukun slept through her alarm. What I know for sure is that I need new friends. Before everyone decided to show up, Solachi and I took a romantic walk on the strip. Then, of course, we took a selfie.
I won’t lie to you, we talked a lot of trash. We made fun of each other, of bad decisions we made in the past, of ex boyfriends, etc. We were so loud that I’m shocked TGIF didn’t just kick us out. I laughed so hard that I was one chuckle away from peeing my pants. Our waiter was horrible. He mixed up our orders and our drinks took forever. In his defense, it was his first day, and I also forgive him because he forgot to charge me for my drink.
We didn’t get our food till past 9pm and the movie’s last show time was 9:30 PM, so no, we didn’t make it to the movies. We ended up eating for three hours and then, everyone came back to my house. We took over Igwe’s space and time. He totally loved it. At about 1:00 AM, Funmie went into the bathroom, washed her face, pinned her hair up, came into the living room and unhooked her bra. Even Igwe was asking what was going on. Eventually, everyone went home. Except Funmie. She went home the next day. I love this girl. She’s just crazy.
The opportunity to sit down with people you have known for years, people who knew you before the you that you are now … it’s priceless. I met Solachi while we were both in high school 14 years ago. I’ve known Funmie and Ibukun for 12 years, and I’ve known Tim for about a decade. We’ve known each other from the time when buying a sandwich in the school cafeteria was something that had to be budgeted. Now, we all grown, but still very silly.
My internal circle of friends has been the same for the 14 years, and as I get older, it’s becoming even more difficult to make new friends. I’m tired. I don’t have as much patience. The last time I attempted making a new friend, it didn’t quite work out. The younger Vera would have cared enough to find out why and maybe try to amend things. The new Vera is like, fuck it, I have bigger fish to fry.
We’re looking forward to more dates. Girlfriends are forever.

Girl, it was fun. My favorite picture is the personal one. You look so innocent like the Vera i met in Parkville high. Unfortunately, u are no longer innocent. Lovely pictures though. It was really awesome hanging out because we didn’t have to hold back. There was no filter, we just let it out and have acted out like teenegers. I love u guys when u are normal and when you are not. And you know all of you are abnormal most of the time. 🙂

Excuse me, what do you mean by the Vera you used to know? I am still as innocent as I was back then. I remain innocent. Thank you.
Pendo says
Just wondering do you have any close non Nigerian girlfriends?
Funmie says
uhn uhn…. No, We do NOT have any close non Nigerian friends…
It somehow never happened for us.
Vera Ezimora says
Pendo, Funmie is speaking for herself. I have had close non Nigerian friends from high school through college, but somehow, we’ve grown apart. I have non Nigerian friends now, but if I’ll call it “close” then I only have one person.
olami says
