I’ve been looking forward to sharing the video of my Listen To Your Mother performance. It was in April of this year that I got the honor of reading about my mommy. The videos were supposed to be released last week, but due to all the violence (Alton Sterling, Philandro Cantille. and the cops in Dallas), they decided to hold off on releasing them.
My piece was a humor piece about my mommy, called My Mommy Said. I was so happy that the audience found the humor in my piece; they laughed in all the right places, made a gal feel good. The video is below for your entertainment.
And here is a playlist of all the Baltimore readings. If you want to watch more readings (and you should; they’re amazing), just check out the Listen To Your Mother YouTube channel. You’re gonna be blown away by these women’s stories.
Also, Ekene Onu, our Nigerian sister, was part of the Atlanta cast, and her piece is titled, I Love My Baby’s Hair. Video is below.
And in case you missed it (or just feel like revisiting it), here’s a recap post of my Listen To Your Mother experience, and there’s a video below for good measure.
Listen To Your Mother is an annual event that gives motherhood a microphone. You don’t have to be a mom to tell your story; being born of a woman is qualification enough. I encourage you to be a part of it; you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how empowered it makes you feel. If you’re interested, check out their website and follow along on Twitter for the next audition in a city near you. Don’t be scared of the audition. The women who audition you are the nicest, most pleasant ladies. It was my first time auditioning for anything, and although I was terrified, I survived!
Thank you, Ann Imig for giving motherhood such a platform. You rock, woman!

Love the hair, love the outfit, and love what your mummy said!
P.S. It would have been nice if you looked up and made some eye contact with the audience.
Awesome job, awesome piece!
