When Xfinity invited me to attend the Season 3 premiere of Power, I looked at the date and time and instantly decided that I was not going. Why? It was slated for July 12th and I knew that Igwe would still be in Nigeria, and the time was in the evening AND the event was in Washington D.C. See, I have a thing with Washington D.C. where I’d just rather not go there because it’s too much for me. Too many traffic lights; too narrow streets; too few parking spots. And to make it worse, the event was in the evening. By my calculation, it would be night by the time the event is over, and I would have to GPS my way out of Washington D.C. At Night. Nope. As you may remember, I was in Washington D.C a little while ago for the Xfinity Moms event, but that was during the day (the recap video is at the bottom of this post). And even with that, I got lost a little. So driving from D.C at night? Nope.
But Igwe convinced me that I must have been crazy to be thinking about turning down the invitation to attend the premiere of a show I actually watched and loved. He said I should ask one of my girls to come along, but I knew my yeye girls were not fans of the show. I asked Funmie if she watched Power and she asked, “What is Power?” Okay, never mind, Funmie. I asked Solachi and she said she didn’t want to go because she did not like Power. I don’t like drugs and blood, she said. Uju would have been perfect, but she’s in Texas.
Even if Solachi and/or Funmie was willing to go, I wouldn’t have taken them because I wanted to go with someone who actually watches the show. Ghen ghen! I asked Frank to be my date instead. Frank is Solachi’s hubby and a big fan of the show. He was so excited when I told him – exactly the reception I wanted.
So on Tuesday, I drove to Solachi’s house with Ada Verastic (she’s closer to D.C. than I am). I left Ada Verastic there, while Frank and I left for the premiere. Frank was dressed for the gods; I liked it. I had told him to dress nice. When we got there and he saw some people in shorts, he almost fainted. But I reminded him that there was no such thing as being overdressed. I wore one of my favorite ankara dresses, but I ended up keeping my flats on instead of changing into my heels because we had quite a walk from where we parked to the theater (Howard Theater), and I was not about to die because of heels. So flats it was.
Frank didn’t even need GPS to get to the theater because he knew exactly where it was. He used to work in the area. He drove us from his house to the venue and back home. Thank you, Frank!!! We were planning on eloping and leaving Igwe and Solachi to miss us, but we decided to come back home, so they wouldn’t commit suicide because we left them.
The premiere was fabulous. The attendees were about 95% Black and 5% White and Other. Being in the midst of so many Black people – especially in light of recent tragedies – made me very happy. I was with my people, and I loved it. It was nice watching the premiere with people who also watched and loved the show. We all gasped and laughed and reacted at the same time, in all the right places.
We had free drinks. Apart from the wines and all, there were three special cocktails: THE GHOST, THE KANAN, and THE TASHA. Frank and I both had THE GHOST at first, and that was my only drink. But eventually, Frank had THE KANAN and a glass of wine. I tasted THE KANAN, but it was too strong for me. Didn’t taste THE TASHA, but how come there wasn’t THE TOMMY?
Overall, I had a very pleasant time. Thank you to Xfinity for inviting me. I look forward to enjoying this season of Power. The season premieres at 9:00 PM on Sunday, July 17th on Starz. If you have never seen Starz, what are you waiting for??? You can watch the entire first season online for free. I mean ABSOLUTELY FREE. You’re welcome. Watch it here.
P.S. This season’s tag line/theme is “Ghosts never die,” so feel free to guess what that means *wink*
P.S. As promised, here’s the video recap of my last trip to D.C
