One question that I have been asked over and over is what inspired me to pick my eye as a profile picture. I have been asked if it’s some kind of symbol, or if I am part of a cult. Apparently, there’s a cult that has one eye as a symbol, and I seem like a likely candidate. Picking the eye, however, was never supposed to be symbolic. It was probably even meant to be temporary.
This first eye was taken while I was waiting for someone to pick me up. I had just gotten a new Nokia flip phone, and its camera was its finest feature. While I was waiting to be picked up, I stood in front of the vanity mirror in the bathroom and took several pictures of myself. This was one of them. All its pictures were green, as you can see. Compared to today’s pictures, that phone’s camera was a joke. So when I started blogging, I needed something personal to represent me. I didn’t want a smiley face or a random picture from the internet (like the Nigerian flag or a yahoo avatar). It was either this green eye or a picture of the fake tattoo I got on my chest, right above my breast. Imagine the attraction that one would have gotten me; I was this close to picking the breast tattoo. Yeah. I chickened out and went with the eye.
This second eye is the same as the first eye, except that I modified it by making it a little less green. I played with it on Windows Picture Explorer – or whatever it’s called. That’s the story to that.
This third eye was taken by my Blackberry. I was lying on my bed, bored. I took several pictures. This one was my favorite one. It was taken in May of last year, about a couple weeks after I got my new Blackberry, and it was not taken for the purpose of my blog, but it, too, has ended up here. I was very proud of myself for putting it up because unlike the other profile pictures, my eye was (is) open in this one.
This last picture was taken by Funmie. I don’t think she took it for the blog, I don’t remember. We were in North Carolina, in front of Aribaba’s house. He was inside and we were both outside playing with the camera as usual. This was one of the very, very, very up close and personal pictures she took of me. The rest showed all of my face, which explains why they have not seen the light of day on this blog. Not to worry, after January 1st 2012, I won’t have to hide pictures anymore – a change that comes with as much relief as it does with trepidation.
That’s it for the pictorial history. After all my hassles, I ended up not doing anything new for the photoshoot. I didn’t buy new outfits, and I did not get my hair done. But I did do my nails – nothing that I don’t do every now and then anyway. I don’t use acrylic or tips on my nails, so all I did was get a manicure and have them painted, but you’ll see.
With the exception of the freezing cold accompanied by the wind, the photoshoot was really, really nice. So grateful to PaOsin for coming out with his leather gloves, double jeans, heavy hat, and leather jacket, ready to shoot. He was so patient with me. I’ll tell you more about him later. Funmie was there in her skimpy little dress, showing her legs to the cold city and playing her part as sister, best friend, and that other position she assigned herself to – don’t remember the name. He was there, too. He was changing my shoes, running back and forth to the car to grab things, helping me change posing styles, even trying to help with brushing my hair which the wind was yeyeing. Funmie chased him away from that last part. I felt really loved. Thank you. I have the best people in my life.
P.S. My birthday (January 14th) – the most anticipated day of the year – is almost here. And my wish list – also the most anticipated wish list of the year – is here.
