Our Sweet Potato, Tosin has married the love of her life, Mohammed, and she’s sharing pictures from her special day with us. This is a picture-heavy post, and I love it. I stared at Tosin’s and Mohammed’s pictures over and over. They just look so — so — real and happy. You know what I mean? I don’t want to make this post longer by typing on and on, so let’s just read their story, in Tosin’s words.
We had our Introduction in November 2013 before he Proposed (which is outside the norm and was mostly for formality because we already knew we were getting married after the introduction ceremony. Oh, and also to present me my gorgeous Emerald ring! -which is what I’ve always wanted). He proposed on 15 February 2014 at a small surprise dinner which he organized with my friends at Nkoyo Restaurant, Ceddi Plaza, Abuja.
I was pleasantly surprised that he put such effort into the proposal and did not go with a cliche Valentine’s Day proposal. He had made fun of me several times that since we had already done our introduction ceremony, he did not have to do any ‘ghen ghen’ thing to give me the ring. Lol. Honestly, I was already sad and had conjured all sorts of unromantic ways he would present the ring to me, as much as I wanted the memory to be special.
I’m sooo glad he didn’t fall my hand. He planned with three of my friends, two of whom are sisters, and the plan was that one of them should say she was organizing a dinner to celebrate her graduation from Catering School. I knew she had been going to Catering School, so I did not think anything of it. I thought she was planning something at her house where she’d cook for us to show off the skill she had acquired but then she said it was at Nkoyo. It felt odd, but I just shrugged it off. She said Mohammed (my husband) was invited, too, but then he told me to ask her if his brother and friend could come as well. I felt uncomfortable asking her but she said it was no biggie, and that they could come.
Meanwhile they were doing all the planning behind my back. The day of the proposal came and I was chilling at my friend’s place. She was also to attend the dinner with me and had made sure she picked out my outfit. She said we had to look good oh, that we shouldn’t dull, and that’s when I started to suspect that something was up, because she had never made such a fuss about my hair and clothes, but I decided to just play along, just in case. I kept thinking nah, no way, Moh wouldn’t steal the shine like that at someone else’s party by proposing so I just shrugged off the thought.
While we were dolling up, he called me up and gave me some flimsy reason that he was no longer going for the party, and that he was upset with me because I missed his call earlier. The whole drama made no sense to me and I was like fine’I’m going for the party anyways, because I wasn’t about to let anyone ruin my fun, but the thing pain me sha! Little did I know that my ‘evil’ friends put him up to it because they know I’m very sharp and felt I was suspecting.
My friend and I went to the restaurant. We met up and greeted everyone, and there was a professional photographer there, and it was someone I knew, but he acted all serious so I didn’t disturb him. Moh, his bro, and his friends walked in about 30 minutes later and I kept forming vex when I saw him, even though I was excited to see him, and honestly the moment I saw him, I knew he was going to propose, but I kept a cool head sha 🙂
He called me aside and said that he wanted to talk to me. He started apologizing for cancelling on me earlier, and while we were talking, the restaurant lights went dim, and when I tried to look around to see why, he didn’t allow me to. I told him I was uncomfortable standing aside from everyone and that we could continue our conversation after the dinner because it was getting awkward. He said okay and as I was about to turn to the table, he called my name and told me he loves me; I told him that I love him too and can we go sit.
I turned and that was when I saw the ring in petals in the table. I gasped!! Although I had kind of expected it, it still took my breath away. Next thing, he was on one knee in front of me, our friends were cheering in the background, and I was busy trying to pull off the costume ring I had on that finger to give space for the real one. The thing no wan gree comot, but thankfully it did eventually come off. While tearing up, I just blanked out from there till he got up to kiss me and they brought the cake with the sparkles and it was all pictures, eating, and drinking from then on.
We live in Abuja, Nigeria and both work in Abuja. We had our Introduction, Traditional, and White wedding here as well cause my parents are based in Abuja while his are based in Kaduna, which is just about two hours from Abuja. We took all the pre-wedding and wedding pictures in Nigeria, too. The castle pictures were taken in Kajuru Castle, Kaduna State (breathtaking place!!), while the others were taken in House 33 (an Art House), Abuja.
