Even With Videos, Done Is Better Than Perfect And Undone

Confession: I’m putting this post up right now for one major reason. I want to commit myself. You know once you make something public, you’re too ashamed to not go through with it. Because what will people say? Come to think of it, maybe that’s why people stay in bad marriages. Yes, I’m throwing shade.

Anyway, as you know, I started vlogging consistently in October. Prior to that, I did videos once in a blue moon. Some people have been doing YouTube videos for years, and some others – like me – have slept on it. It was only when I went to Nigeria last year and recorded a bunch of videos (for myself) that I began to appreciate the awesomeness of videos. It’s weird that I did not start doing videos sooner,  considering my ultimate goal.

After publishing a vlog (Verastic Life) consistently for 20 weeks, I have decided to change things up. While I’ll keep creating episodes of Verastic Life, I won’t be doing it every week. Thinking about it, I know why I didn’t go into videos sooner. It’s because (1) It’s a more difficult kind of content to create. Unlike blogging, vlogging requires so much more preparation, time, equipment, and financial investment. And (2) because I was waiting to be perfect, to have everything in place, like a perfect space, perfect camera, perfect lighting, perfect microphone, perfect editing software. You get the idea. I’ve learned my lesson: done is better than perfect and undone. 

So I started doing the darn thing, and I have learned more in the past three months of vlogging than I have in my years of not vlogging and reading material, waiting to be perfect. The reality is that even in vlogging, nothing teaches better than practice. So bear with me as I learn. I promise to get better with time. Sometimes, I go back to my really old posts and I shriek at the way I used to write back then, but I have obviously gotten better with time – not just in the content of my blog, but also in the way I write, the way I construct my sentences, and even my work with brands.
