Writing Prompt: Have you ever been cheated on?<\/h3>\n

Ahhhh. Yes. Let me tell you all about it. If I did not have this writing prompt, this story would have alternatively been titled: Let Me Tell About When I Was Cheated On<\/em>. I suppose I can still tag it as such.<\/p>\n

So, the year was 2007. I was dating a Yoruba demon<\/strong><\/del><\/em> guy, and I had been dating him for two years at this point. I know what some of you are thinking: Vera, you and these Yoruba guys!<\/em> I know, I know. I always try to run away, but na dem dey rush me. Even the women sef dey rush me. Hi, Funmie!<\/p>\n

Let’s call him Sam. Sam and I had started off having a good relationship. I had not had many relationships, so I didn’t have a high standard (although I thought I did). Honestly, Sam was nice. We had good conversations and good laughs, and he got along very well with my friends.<\/p>\n

Sam was quite a jealous lover. It was cute at first till it became bothersome. He was convinced that every guy wanted me. I mean, I know I’m hot *fans self* but I did not think I was that<\/em> hot.  Still, Sam was sure they all wanted me. By the way, all you male readers and male bloggers were a problem too. People like Boorish Male, NaijaBloke, and Guy Horny topped the list; they didn’t even know the wahala they were causing in my life. And it did not help that Boorish Male wrote me a whole love post on his blog. I’m still sweating from it. Link below.<\/p>\n

If he called me and I did not pick up, Sam would call again. And again. And again. And again. Then he’d block his number and call. Several times. Then he’d call from another phone. Several times. When we eventually spoke, the conversation would start with “Where were you? What were you doing? Who were you with?<\/em> ….” So that was our relationship.<\/p>\n

At some point, Sam told me about a female friend of his. He said she reminded him of me, that she was funny and an only child. Those were the only details I remembered, and I never really thought much of it. Then one day, Sam said he needed to talk to me. He said he had a confession. His confession was that someone was pregnant for him. That was definitely shocking to me.<\/p>\n

Then about a week later, Sam recanted his story. No, no one was pregnant for him, he said. He said he had only said that someone was pregnant so that when he actually confessed the real truth, I wouldn’t be as mad at him. The real truth, he said, was that he cheated, but that no one was pregnant. I did not believe him. At the very least, I was confused. Then he came to my house one day and asked for my bible. I gave it to him. He placed his right hand on it and swore on his mother’s life that no one was pregnant for him.<\/p>\n

We broke up.  He spent the next couple of months chasing me hard. He called my friends (Funmie and Uju) all the time, begging them to beg me, said he was sorry and that no one was pregnant. For Valentine’s Day in 2008, he wanted us to hang out. I said no because we were not together. That became a big fight. Eventually, a child was born. That was when I knew for sure that he lied. I still do not understand why he did that – the lie, I mean. We were already broken up after he told me that he cheated, so he did not need to come back and untell the truth he had told. He was free as a bird to go on and live his life. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had gone back to him. His mother is still alive, by the way – I think.<\/p>\n

He ended up marrying his baby momma, and I’ve met her several times, and she’s quite lovely actually. In another life, we’d be friends. I don’t think she knew the status of our relationship when they got together. I think he was playing us both. In fact, even as of today, I don’t think she knows the full story, but she won’t be hearing it from me. There’s so much else I could write here – things that happened as recently as this year – but I won’t. This is an open space, and I have learned that ANYONE can be reading. It will never be said that Vera broke Sam’s marriage.  Nope.<\/p>\n

So, that’s my cheating story. That’s the one I know of anyway. One never knows everything these days. <\/p>\n

Oh, and full disclosure: At the time Sam was getting someone pregnant, I was “talking to” someone else too. But in my case, he was based in Europe, and that came with its own set of challenges. I liked him a lot, but nothing ever came of it. He was Igbo, older, and hella funny. And I liked his Igbo name. I wonder how he’s doing these days.<\/p>\n

P.S.<\/strong> I met Boorish Male in Nigeria in 2016. He was still smooth.  His voice was still sexy. And I still won’t be left alone with him in a room.<\/p>\n
