Although I was aware of what was going on during the election, I was not actively or purposely following it. But it was hard to miss it. Everywhere I turned, there was one update or the other with the #NigeriaDecides. I read views from both PDP and APC supporters. I read about the infamous debate between the youths representing both parties. Igwe started to watch the video, but I just could not be bothered. Maybe it’s my lack of political wisdom, but I did not understand why people who would actually not be presidenting<\/em> Nigeria were debating. What did it matter what they thought?<\/p>\n

\"Buhari\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I was one of the people who hoped that Buhari would win, but I did not believe it could happen. So naturally, when it did, I was blown. I don’t know President Goodluck Jonathan personally – obviously, but I felt like he left us wanting for more. I do not pretend to know what happens behind closed doors between Presidents and President Makers, so I don’t assume that changing Nigeria can be done with the snap of a finger, but I think that he could have done more.<\/p>\n

On the tribal issue, I heard my Igbo people were mostly supporting GEJ. \u00a0Really, I get it. I understand why the would support him – although he’s not actually Igbo – but Nigeria, unfortunately, is still very tribal. To me, what difference does it make what his tribe is if the people are still suffering? I don’t care either that he calls himself a Christian. Hanging out with Oyedepo and Adeboye doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.<\/p>\n

Some have said that while Dame Patience may have been a terrible First Lady, she was at least a good wife. That’s nice, except that we need a great First Lady, not a great wife. What happens between her and her husband is their personal business. How she treats her people, however, is Nigeria’s business. People have also said that GEJ was loyal to his wife. That’s great, too, but again, not Nigeria’s primary concern. Besides, a man being loyal to his wife isn’t unexpected or out of the ordinary. It’s his job. People are so used to reading about bad husbands that they praise \u00a0the most mediocre things as greatness. Husbands are supposed to be loyal to their wives. If your husband (or wife) isn’t loyal, get a new one.<\/p>\n

I don’t know what promises Buhari made for Nigeria, if he made any at all. But what Buhari’s win means to me is that if GEJ, an incumbent President was voted out, it gives me hope that if Buhari or any President coming after him falls short, he, too will be voted out. Now that we have set this precedence, maybe we can have a female President next?<\/p>\n

Congratulations, Nigeria. I pray that Nigeria has seen its worst, and moving forward, things will be shockingly, disturbingly, uncomfortably great. Amen.<\/p>\n
