Uniqul is a startup company from Finland, and they have developed a new way for us to pay for our transactions and much more. It’s a face recognition device that doubles as a payment system. Basically, when you go to check out, the thing recognizes your face and then you press OK on the screen. There are no details yet on how your face goes into the system. You can even use it to check in at the airport.
Like I said, there are no details yet on how this will work, like how the machine will get your face in the first place. Maybe from your license? My first instinct was to say, no way!! Why would I want to make a payment with my face? And what if the machine makes a mistake and puts up someone else’s face? It’s a human-made machine, so it cannot be 100% right all the time. What about about twins? Will the machine be able to tell the difference between Twin One and Twin Two?
The whole thing sounds ridiculous to me, but then again, that’s what I thought when they started making cell phones with cameras. I really thought, who the heck needs a camera on the phone? But look where we are today. I don’t think there are phones without cameras now. That would be sacrilegious. No?
Watch this video below that tells you more about this technology. Oh, and I don’t know about people checking in to airplanes via this face recognition thing. Sounds insecure. I don’t know.

Hello,
Thank you for the mention: I’ll address some of your questions.
To be able to use Uniqul you need to register an account and a payment method with us first. The Uniqul system will take your base photo at the registration terminal. Terminals will be set up in the vicinity of the first deployment spots.
Our database tests indicate recognition rates of 96-97%, where the remainder will have to input their PIN number before they can approve the transaction. We expect to be able to increase this rate significantly during the autumn.
We have been able to differentiate between identical twins – that shouldn’t be a problem.
There are UK airports that are actually using similar technology for check-ins, and they have had very good feedback.
Oh and why would you want to use it? I think it is going to be the most convenient, secure and fastest way to pay.
