I really had no intention of blogging about Miley’s alleged twerking at the VMAs, mostly because what she did was not even twerking to me. Also, I didn’t see much of a big deal with her twerk because people have done worse [at the VMAs]. The reason her twerk – albeit a bad one – got famous is because she’s Miley.
But for those who might be curious about what twerking is actually supposed to look like (Hi Funmie!), here’s a video from The Official Twerk Team. You can even hire them for your event. Watch and learn.

Sisi Yemmie says
I need to get my twerking game on!
Vera Ezimora says
Yes ooo! You need to. These girls’ hips roll like there’s no bone in them.
Fad says
Do guys really like this twerking dance or they are just patronising the ladies doing it?
I have never liked it in my case, kind of reduce my view of ladies doing it..
Nothing sexy about it, it actually reduces my appetite on looking for booties…
Thank God am vegetarian…
Vera Ezimora says
What?! Really??? I’m shocked. I think it’s an interesting dance. I would absolutely love to know how to twerk like this, but it’s not something that I would personally do outside. It’ll be strictly for entertainment at home. Or with my friends.
Pendo says
And I bet you if it was a man filming that twerk they definitely had sex after that performance #thatisall!
Fad says
Depend on the man, must be one on a low spectrum..
Its actually a turn off for most guys
You can’t pay me to sit and watch it, neither do my friends, guess different class..
It can also be misconceived by the guys i.e assuming a lady one is dating twerks like this, the first thought to an average guy will be she must have being very busy..
Such dance moves will invalidate a relationship fast, but then depends on the class they belong to..
Vera Ezimora says
Hmmmmmmmm. Fad, this your theory get as e be oh. I don’t think that a woman should be judged by her ability to twerk. There are people – men and women – who have very flexible bodies and are able to do a lot of things, just for the fun of it. I don’t look at twerking as a dirty dance, nor do I feel like it gives insight into a person’s life or character, but I just wouldn’t do it outside.
Fad says
Vera is playing the political correctness game with me..lol
Thank God you ended up saying you won’t do it outside, that says it all..
The same reservation you have for not doing it outside is the same reasons we believe is a turn off..
Dancing is an art, it says a lot about you hence we give it different names. However ladies are not that fortunate since they have limited ways of dancing without shaking their booty, that my dear often looked at ladies as a sex object and not dancing for pleasure..
You saw Pendo’s summation, such dance is littered with sex and not dancing for pleasure..
If ladies are sending out messages clearly that they don’t want to be tagged as sex object, trust me you do this dance in public automatically downgrade you to the said category.
Anyway I still maintain ladies can be judge on this irrespective if they like it or not..
I do.
Vera Ezimora says
Lool at political correctness game. You’re trying to trap me in a corner here. I understand why someone would be judged by their dance, but I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be so – ideally. And yes, I maintain that I will not do this dance outside. In my opinion, this really isn’t a dance that you just do anywhere. Like, will I go to a wedding and dance this way? Tufia kwa. Maybe it’s acceptable in a club, I don’t know. But I wouldn’t do it there either. Well, I don’t even go to clubs for starters. Maybe when Funmie and I are fooling around, we’ll do this dance to entertain ourselves, but that’s about it.
Fad says
I need to go back to the topic on “One word to describe Vera” I think sensitive and crowd pleaser should be added, now you see why political correctness is suitable this time..
You sha looked for a way to tone it down, well it is good since such dance is by choice..
However the dancer must realise each twerk reduces their worth, their respect, their adoration and many more…
So tell me secretly will you twerk for Igwe????lol
Vera Ezimora says
No, no, no. Can’t be a crowd pleaser. Not good. Lol. Each twerk reduces their worth? Haha. But you know what i also just thought about? We have to consider culture in this situation. Twerking is an African American dance – primarily, so we ought to look at it from their eyes, not from our Nigerian eyes.
Per twerking for Igwe, what makes you think I don’t already do it? Hahahahaha.
Fad says
You are absolutely right Vera bringing culture into it, no wonder they call their women bitches( sorry ladies) but is the truth..
Don’t worry Igwe will confess to me in future when we get to share a beer…lol
Vera Ezimora says
Haba, Fad. Not all of them do that. I know it looks bad, but I’m trying to celebrate the good ones — and there are a lot of them.
And err, Igwe won’t tell! Lol.
Enitan says
No, no, no Vera, I don’t agree with you. Twerking is not an African American dance. It is a word that people use in the United States for a dance. Okay, so twerking is a dance described by shaking of hips in an up and down motion and wobbling and jiggling one’s yansh. Don’t we have those same types of movements in some of our African and more specifically Nigerian dances? I think it just has to do with an individual’s opinion. I know some African Americans who think Makosa is very sexual. The summary of it all is there are some people who like the dance and think it is okay and there are some people who don’t. And Fad, I don’t agree with your reasoning for any man calling any woman a ‘bitch’ but I’ll leave that alone for now
Fad says
Apologies on that, I sent it out before realising it had limited interpretation..
Basically when Vera brought culture into it, hiphop culture came to me.. All the hardcore videos played out right in front of me hence that word B…. came to me..
I wasn’t using it as a generic statement, just that hiphop culture was left out in my explanation.
Apologies to all the ladies..
Feel free to rearrange Vera’s face now…lol
Vera Ezimora says
Lol. Fad, I don’t know what to tell you sef SMH
Vera Ezimora says
Enitan, if you Google the history of twerking, you’ll see that its earliest origin is from African Americans, and most twerking happenings are also by African Americans. Even when Miley twerked and it became famous, Black people weren’t happy because they said they had been twerking long before Miley. True to form, Twerking is said to have been around for about 20 years now.
Yes, we definitely have some bum bum dance in Nigeria, and we don’t find it overtly sexual just because it’s our dance.
webround says
Found this article on Myne Whitman’s blog
http://www.thisisafrica.me/visual-arts/detail/19862/twerk-booty-dancing-gender-politics-white-privilege
Fad says
Nice one webround.
Check this final statement out
“Today, booty-shaking has become a means through which Black women reclaim ownership of their bodies and assert their sexuality while resisting hetero-patriarchal and racist cultures that seek to repress women’s sexuality and/or control women’s bodies, not to mention a means to having fun. It is also worth mentioning that it takes a huge amount of skill to do these dances, and this needs to be acknowledged and appreciated, too, even if the dances aren’t your cup of tea.”
This view is similar to Vera’s view, however always easy for writers to play the right music to the listening ears yet not dancing to it..
They can write it but will not do the same act yet condemning people who found such acts distasteful…
I recognize culture definitely but then the way is done in Africa is not as loud as the attached clip or similar.
Funny enough, just listened to the news on tattoo earlier today.. The question was despite old age tradition on tattoo people are still bias on people with tattoos, this also includes employers reacting negatively to potential employees..
Basically the dance can be an act or accepted cultural dance moves, the fact remains it continues and will remain a toxic dance in the mainstream society.
Vera Ezimora says
Fad,
I’m glad for this article. You can’t say for sure though that it will remain toxic – not that I consider it so right now. Times are changing. We have gay marriages now, so what’s twerking? Lol.
Bottom line, it’s a sexual dance. It may not be your thing, but it doesn’t and shouldn’t mean that the dancers are a bunch of “Animashauns” (spelling?)
Vera Ezimora says
Thank you, Webround.
Vera Ezimora says
Pendo, it might have been a gay man. Lol.
Funmie says
You might as well take off the clothes and just have sex with the air/ the invisible…. NONSENSE
Vera Ezimora says
Lol. Funmie, I think they are scantily dressed just so you see the twerking very well. You know you like it. Hahaha.
Enitan says
Yeah this was too much for me. The zig zag on their shorts also further exaggerated the twerkingness (not a word, I know). I’m a lady but if I see a lady doing this, I would think less of her. I am however shocked that Fad who is a guy is not amused by it. Not even secretly Fad? Lol! Please oh, I’m not insinuating that all guys like this
Vera Ezimora says
Like you, I am shocked, too that Fad doesn’t like it. I think my thoughts on the lady would depend on several things (1) where she’s doing it [wedding or club or at home?], (2) why she’s doing it (3) what she’s wearing
…. Oh, well.
Fad says
So Vera and Enitan found it strange that not all guys like it, including secretly..
I can imagine a lady doing the twerk for me, that means I will be needing hip replacement before my time…..
Vera did you notice the ladies in the clip did not show their faces, I wonder why???
Vera Ezimora says
Fad, they showed their faces oh. Maybe not in this particular video, but they have more videos on YouTube and they have a Twitter page where their faces are very visible. Plus, they do this as business, too. You can hire them as entertainment, so it’s hard to not show your face when you’re an entertainer. And I wouldn’t worry about need hip replacements. Medical technology is so advanced now, so I’m sure they’ll do a good job on you. By the time they’re done, you’ll probably go home and twerk for your wife sef 😉
Fad says
Thanks for the correction, guess its a career choice for them..
Looooll! Nice one on twerking for my wife..I bet she will refer me promptly to the mental unit..lol
You are funny Vera.
Vera Ezimora says
Fad, it’s my turn to have a drink with your wife. We’ll have some cocktails, and she will tell me all about your twerking
meme says
Damn!!! that’s some real twerking o! Naija girls no go carry last for this one.
Vera Ezimora says
Meme, at all, at all oh! Why shall we shy? Meanwhile, I haven’t learned it yet. I shall commit it to the Lord in prayers.
earniewhine muibat lawal says
I know its not by force, but i dont want to know how to do this. Seriously, i will stick to my whining and azonto and etigi and the rest, so not this!
Vera Ezimora says
Etigi? Chei. Which dance is that one? I need to go watch and learn
