Diana Nyad, a 64 year old woman (and decorated endurance swimmer) has just completed a record-breaking swim. She swam from Cuba to Florida nonstop, without a shark cage, and it took her 52 hours to complete the journey. Yes, she was swimming for more than two days nonstop. She has been attempting this journey for the past 35 years (she was 28 when she started), and this was her 5th time. She also said it would be her last attempt, win or fail. I’m glad she won.
You know, I can barely complete a 30-minute intense exercise without stopping, and I am not 30 yet. But here we are, a 64 year old woman has just blown serious smoke in my face. I can’t even swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping. For starters, I only learned to float in June, while on vacation in Miami.
I don’t really understand the motivation behind Ms. Nyad’s dream, but I don’t have to understand it. All that matters is that she understands it. I have dreams of my own [that do not include swimming at all], and some day, I’ll blog about them. Reading about a 64 year old woman who had the courage to chase her dreams, in spite of the challenges I’m sure she had, is really making me feel the need to work harder, step it up several notches, and fight like my life depends on it to live the life that I dream of in my head. All I can say now is congratulations to Diana Nyad. May you never stop dreaming and living.
Somewhere in Shark Land, I know the sharks are mad at themselves, like, how the heck did she pass by? She would have served as an appetizer for at least one shark. But I’m really picturing this woman swimming and thinking, wooooooooowwwww! I throway all my yansh for her.
What’s your wildest, craziest dream?
Berry Dakara says
I think my wildest dream is to be a worldwide famous actress!
Vera Ezimora says
Woooow. Me, too. I mean, I have the dream, too, but it actually isn’t my wildest. That’s scary.

bia, does non-stop mean, she no chop, she no sleep and she didn’t piss or poo?
Vera Ezimora says
Not completely sure. They describe it as nonstop. However, i read some place else that she ate and drank, so I’m utterly confused.

Here in Yoruba land, we always thank the brilliant mind behind a brilliant question. Thank you for that question.
Vera Ezimora says
Na very good question indeed wey she ask. I wondered the same thing too — until I read that she ate.
Good Naija Girl says
After I heard about her accomplishment, I felt like the biggest slacker around. I’ve never had razor-sharp focus long-term, but it seems to be the key to accomplishing one’s dreams. All the best to you with yours!
Vera Ezimora says
GNG, you’re not alone. It’s easy to dream, and it’s easy to accomplish — if it’s in like two days. Lol! God help us all.
Funmie says
uhn
Vera Ezimora says
Funmie, your mates are swimming across the country ooo! What are you doing? Lol.
Natural Nigerian says
She finally made it!!! Yay!! A lesson in tenacity.
Vera Ezimora says
Yes indeed! 35 whole years. Wow.
