The Super Bowl was this past Sunday and I’m still too upset to even talk about the Seahawk’s loss. It’s not just that they lost, it’s how they lost — an interception — at the one yard line — with 20 seconds to go. They should have handed it to Marshawn Lynch. I digress. The Patriots won the game (more like the Seahawks lost the game) and the Patriots coach, Bill Belichick celebrated and kissed his daughter on the lips in the process.
Question is: what’s wrong with this picture?
To me, absolutely nothing is wrong with it. It’s unfortunate that we live in a time where so much is sexual. Innocent things are now viewed as sexual and things that should never, ever be sexual are now actually sexual. People are saying that it’s sick and twisted that he’s tongueing down his daughter. Except, that is not what he’s doing.
I think people are more likely to understand and appreciate this father-daughter kiss if they experienced it, too. And I did. Growing up, I kissed both my parents on their lips and we said “I love you” all the time, and for me, it was the norm. It wasn’t until my friends witnessed the relationship between me and my parents and told me we were weird that I realized my life with my parents was not the same with everyone. I still kiss them on the lips. I kiss my grandma and aunt on the cheeks, and that’s because I didn’t grow up kissing them at all. I have kissed my friends (Solachi and Funmie) on their lips, too. It’s just normal to me.
It’s not as if I go around kissing people on their lips — or kissing them at all. It’s all about the relationship I have with the person. As for Bill Belichick and his daughter, I think that instead of turning what seems to be a genuine moment of love, affection, and celebration into something nasty and sick, we should instead all hope to have this closeness with our parents and children.
When I have children, I hope their complaint would be that their mom kisses them way too much, but that they love her anyway.
Note to Bill Belichick: I still don’t like you for winning the Super Bowl, but on kissing your daughter, I stand solidly behind you.
