I’m currently watching the state of the [American] union, and the difference between this and my Nigerian “gathering” is astounding. First of all, at 9 PM on the dot, people started coming in. Whether they like him or not, everyone accorded President Barack Obama his respect as the Head of State. And while he spoke, the only interruptions that came were from applauses. Once, Speaker, John Boehner even clapped!
When President Obama came out, he shook hands, hugged people, kissed some, and made a lot of jokes. I’d like to see the Nigerian President do that. The fear of juju, witches, and wizards and the guilty conscience of squandering the people’s money will not allow them to get too close. Everyone is an enemy, and so, food must be eaten with a very long spoon. And there’s no way I will be able to watch such a speech without shouting, “Thunder faya all of you dia!” at least thrice. From my bedroom, I would have already committed treason against the President of Nigeria — according to his standards, not mine.
Watching the President give Rep Giffords a hug brought tears to my eyes (watch the video below). It was almost a year ago that she got shot in the head by some psycho. But today, she attended her last state of the union address, and she looked beautiful. Tomorrow, she will be resigning her position. Her husband was beaming as he watched his wife. This kind of love cannot be faked. But I digress. This is about our President.
The President of the United States is speaking, and I am on my bed, clapping for him, smiling with him, tweeting about him, and blogging about him — all with a wide grin on my face. Say what you will about President Barack Obama and/or about America, this is still a nation, and he, without a shadow of doubt, it still a President. Gbam! President Barack Hussein Obama, I throway yansh for you.
Watch the President’s speech here:
Like I said, I throway yansh for President Barack Obama
P.S. I typed this post yesterday (during the speech), but I didn’t post it because the full speech video wasn’t available yet.
