Behold, the fork that can help you lose weight … and it does this by simply controlling your eating, or trying to control it. It’s called the HAPI fork (pronounced, Happy Fork), and it attempts to help you control your weight (and lose some of it) by measuring and keeping count of your fork servings. It measures how fast you eat, and how many servings you eat per minute. Each time your fork leaves your plate and enters your mouth, it counts it as a “fork serving,” and if you eat too too fast, it will let you know via indicator lights (and vibrations, I think).
At first glance, I thought, WTF. Like, why would I need a fork to tell me that I’m eating too fast? But then, I began to think, hmmmmm, maybe it won’t be a totally bad idea. I have read and heard many times that eating too fast does/will contribute to weight gain because when you’re eating too fast, you’re not paying attention to how much food is going in, and by the time you realize that you’re full, you would have already eaten more than you should have. And that’s when that stuffed feeling happens. I should know.
I have also read and heard that you should not wait until you are starving to eat because by that time, you’ll dish out more food than you need, and you will eat it too fast to even notice. I think we have all experienced this at least once. And it is never a good feeling – for me anyway.
Now, back to this fork, so what does it do with the information it collects while you’re eating? Well, the info is uploaded via USB to your online dashboard where it tracks your progress. You can pre-order it now, but it won’t be available till April 1st 2013. Wait. This date is suspicious. April Fool’s joke? *one brow up*
Would I use this fork? Yes, totally. Would I buy this fork? I doubt it – unless it comes at a really affordable price. Better yet, I’ll take it if it’s free, and I’ll be the fork’s guinea pig. I would actually really like to try this fork and tell you what I think of it. But I guess I’ll have to wait and see if I want it enough to buy it. My only problem with this fork so far is that it does not – to my knowledge – measure the calories and/or amount of food you’re eating. I mean, how does the fork know what you’re eating? Two fork servings of salad is not equal to two fork servings of cheesecake. And one tiny piece of cheesecake isn’t equal to one big piece of cheesecake either. So will the fork know the value of what I’m eating?
The HAPI fork isn’t the only thing that the HAPILABS has created. They also have a HAPI watch and the HAPI track. I’m unsure what the HAPI watch does, but the HAPI track is a little thingy that you can clip to your belt or pants and it will measure your physical activity in real time and tell you how many calories you’ve burned, etc. I think something like this already exists, but I am not entirely sure.
The good news is that both the HAPI fork and the HAPI track – maybe even the HAPI watch, too – come in pink. So if you’re a mysterious lover of the color pink, today is a winning day for you.
So, would you buy this fork? And do you think it will be worth it?
